Cookie Policy

What cookies are, how Dead Simple Computing uses them, and how you can control them.

1. Introduction

Dead Simple Computing Ltd uses cookies and similar technologies on our website.

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, what this website actually sets and loads, and how you can control it.

2. How This Website Behaves

Two things are worth knowing before the detail.

  • Analytics loads immediately. Google Analytics runs in the head of every page, before you interact with anything, so it is already running as you read this.
  • There is no cookie preference panel. The notice bar shown on your first visit has one button, which hides the bar and does not switch anything on or off. There are no category toggles, no essential-only option, and no cookie settings control in the footer.

If you do not want the analytics or the third-party requests described below, the controls that work are in your browser and in Google's own opt-out. Both are in section 6.

3. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently and provide information to website owners.

  • Session cookies: Temporary, expire when you close your browser
  • Persistent cookies: Remain on your device for a set period
  • First-party cookies: Set by the website you visit
  • Third-party cookies: Set by a different website (e.g., analytics providers)
  • Local and session storage: Not cookies, but a similar store in your browser that a website can read and write

4. Cookies We Set

Our own server sets two cookies. The website and its forms need them, and there is no way to turn them off while using the site.

CookiePurposeDuration
Session cookieMaintains your session while browsing, including form state2 hours
XSRF-TOKENCross-site request forgery protection on forms2 hours

For three small things we use your browser's own storage rather than a cookie:

  • dsc_cookie_seen in local storage, so the cookie notice bar is not shown again once you have dismissed it
  • ains_cid and ains_teased in session storage, which identify your conversation with Ainsley, our website assistant, and remember that the chat has already introduced itself. Both are cleared when you close the tab.

5. Analytics and Advertising

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read, how people arrive, and what they do next, so that we can improve the site. The Google tag loads on every page without asking first, so analytics cookies are set on your first visit.

CookieProviderPurposeDuration
_gaGoogle AnalyticsDistinguishes unique users2 years (Google's default)
_ga_[ID]Google AnalyticsMaintains session state2 years (Google's default)

Analytics data is held in our Google Analytics property under the data retention window set there.

Google Ads conversion tracking can be switched on through the same Google tag. Where it is configured, Google may also set advertising cookies so that an enquiry can be attributed to an ad. We do not use tracking pixels from social media platforms.

6. How To Refuse Cookies

Because the website offers no consent choice, refusing happens in your browser or with Google's own tool.

Browser Settings

  • Chrome: Settings, Privacy and Security, Cookies
  • Firefox: Options, Privacy & Security, Cookies
  • Safari: Preferences, Privacy, Cookies
  • Edge: Settings, Privacy, Search and Services, Cookies

Blocking or clearing the two cookies in section 4 will stop our forms working.

Google Analytics Opt-Out

Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

Blocking Third-Party Requests

A tracker-blocking extension, or a browser that blocks trackers by default, stops the third-party requests in section 7 from being made at all. On this site that is the only way to prevent them.

7. Third Parties We Load

Some parts of the site are requested from third parties. Those requests reveal your IP address and browser details to them, and they may set their own cookies, which we do not control.

Third partyWhat it doesWhen it loads
Google Analytics (googletagmanager.com)Website analytics, as described in section 5Every page
Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com)Serves the typefaces the site is set in. We have chosen not to host them ourselves. Google states that the Fonts API does not set cookies, but the request does reveal your IP address to Google.Every page
CloudflareSecurity and performance in front of the website. Cloudflare may set its own cookies, for example to tell automated traffic from real visitors.Every page
Cloudflare Turnstile (challenges.cloudflare.com)Anti-spam check on our formsEvery page, so that a form anywhere on the site can use it
api.ipify.org, ipapi.co, speed.cloudflare.comReturn your public IP address, approximate location and connection speed for the "what your browser reveals" toolOnly on that tool's page
Google Maps (maps.google.com)Embeds a map of your position on the same toolOnly if you press the location button and grant permission

8. Cookies and Our Tools

  • The cookies in section 4 and the analytics in section 5 apply on the Tool pages exactly as they do everywhere else
  • Password Generator does not use cookies, all generation happens client-side
  • What your browser reveals reads the cookies and browser storage it can see and shows them back to you. That reading happens in your browser and we do not store the result. The page lists the third-party services it calls.
