Spyware

Threats

Malware that secretly monitors user activity and collects information without consent.

Spyware covertly monitors user activity and collects information—browsing habits, keystrokes, credentials, files, and more—without the user's knowledge or consent. Information is sent to attackers for identity theft, fraud, or espionage. Spyware ranges from relatively benign (tracking browsing for advertising) to highly invasive (corporate espionage tools). It often arrives bundled with free software or through malicious websites. Keyloggers, screen capture tools, and credential harvesters are common spyware types.

Why It Matters

The DSC Perspective:

Spyware enables credential theft and corporate espionage. Endpoint protection should detect spyware, and users should be cautious about free software. Consider the risk of spyware when handling sensitive information.
