ICO

Data Protection

Information Commissioner's Office—UK's data protection regulator and supervisory authority.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the UK's independent regulator for data protection and information rights. The ICO enforces UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and related legislation. It investigates complaints, issues guidance, conducts audits, and can impose fines up to £17.5 million or 4% of global turnover. The ICO also handles Freedom of Information and other information rights matters.

Why It Matters

The DSC Perspective:

The ICO is your data protection regulator. Data breaches must be reported to the ICO within 72 hours if they risk individual rights. ICO guidance helps interpret data protection requirements.
