Process of returning to the primary system after it's restored following a failover.
Failback is the process of returning operations to the primary system after it's been repaired or restored following a failover event. Failback requires ensuring the primary system is fully functional, synchronising any data changes that occurred during failover, and managing the transition back. Failback can be as complex as failover and should be planned and tested. Some organisations run on backup systems for extended periods before failback to ensure stability.
Why It Matters
The DSC Perspective:
Failover is only half the story—you need to get back to primary systems eventually. Plan and test failback procedures. Data synchronisation during failback is often where problems occur.
