Electronic document binding a public key to an identity, verified by a Certificate Authority.
A digital certificate is an electronic document that binds a public key to an identity (person, organisation, or device), verified by a trusted Certificate Authority. Certificates enable encrypted communications and identity verification. When you connect to an HTTPS website, the server presents a certificate proving its identity. Certificates have validity periods and must be renewed before expiration. Certificate types include SSL/TLS (websites), code signing (software), and S/MIME (email).
Why It Matters
The DSC Perspective:
Certificates enable secure communications but require management. Expired certificates cause service outages and security warnings. Track certificate expiration and renew proactively.
