Network of compromised computers controlled collectively by attackers for malicious purposes.
A botnet is a network of compromised computers (bots) under centralised command and control. Botnets can comprise millions of infected machines, providing attackers with enormous collective resources for DDoS attacks, spam campaigns, credential stuffing, cryptocurrency mining, or malware distribution. Botnets are rented to other criminals as infrastructure. Takedown efforts target command-and-control servers, but resilient botnets use distributed or encrypted communication to survive disruption.
Why It Matters
The DSC Perspective:
Botnets power many attack types—if you face DDoS or credential stuffing, botnets are likely involved. Preventing your systems from joining botnets (through endpoint protection) contributes to broader internet security.
