Bot

Threats

Compromised computer controlled remotely, often as part of a larger network of infected machines.

A bot (short for robot) is a compromised computer under remote control, typically as part of a botnet. Bot malware enables attackers to issue commands—sending spam, launching DDoS attacks, mining cryptocurrency, or distributing additional malware. Infected computers often show no obvious symptoms while participating in criminal activities. Users may be unaware their systems are compromised until bandwidth or performance issues emerge.

Why It Matters

The DSC Perspective:

Your computers could be participating in attacks without your knowledge. Endpoint protection and network monitoring help detect bot activity. Unusual outbound traffic or connections to known command-and-control servers indicate potential bot infection.
