Badware

Threats

Catch-all term for any software that behaves badly—malware, spyware, adware, and other unwanted programs.

Badware is an informal, catch-all term for software that behaves maliciously or deceptively—including malware, spyware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). The term gained prominence through StopBadware.org, which tracked websites distributing harmful software. Badware may not be technically illegal but violates user expectations through deceptive installation, unwanted behaviour, or privacy violations.

Why It Matters

The DSC Perspective:

Badware reminds us that threats extend beyond traditional malware. Software that's technically legal can still harm your organisation through unwanted behaviour, privacy violations, or security risks.
