Adware

Threats

Software that displays unwanted advertisements, often bundled with free programs.

Adware (advertising-supported software) displays advertisements, often intrusively through pop-ups, browser toolbars, or injected ads. While some adware is merely annoying (bundled with free software), malicious adware tracks user behaviour, redirects searches, and can download additional malware. The line between adware and spyware often blurs. Adware typically arrives through software bundles, deceptive downloads, or browser extensions.

Why It Matters

The DSC Perspective:

Adware degrades user experience and can indicate broader security issues. Strict software installation policies and regular system reviews help prevent adware accumulation. Persistent adware may indicate more serious compromise.
